SMTP relay behavior in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Exchange Server

The basic test:

Start a command prompt.

Type telnet ServerName 25, where ServerName is the SMTP server name or IP address and 25 is the port number, and then press ENTER.

Type EHLO, and then press [ENTER].

At the Telnet session prompt, type RSET. The telnet session responds with text that is similar to the following:

  1. 250 2.0.0 Resetting

  2. Type MAIL FROM:UserName@DomainName.tld, where UserName is the name of the user, DomainName is the name of the domain, and tld is the top level domain such as .com or .net.
    The telnet session responds with text that is similar to the following:

  3. 250 2.1.0 UserName@DomainName.tld….Sender OK

  4. Type RCPT TO:RecipientName@DomainName.tld, where RecipientName is the e-mail address of the recipient.
    The telnet session responds with text that is similar to the following:

  5. 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for RecipientName@ DomainName.tld

Me to a “T”

I had a friend of mine point out an article that he thought talked about “what real IT guys (like all of us) want in the workplace and what leads to genuine teams.”  Thanks, Bob.

He was right!  It’s almost perfect. 

The article, The Unspoken Truth About Managing Geeks, is written by Jeff Ello, IT Manager at Krannert School of Management at Purdue University.

I’ve always said that in almost every sense an organizations IT department is different.  Yeah, I know “they all say that”.  However, with IT groups, it’s true.  As Ello points out, “It’s all about respect”.

Anyway, I could recite the whole article but that is usually frowned upon.  I just wanted to point out that I really liked it.

So, if you want to know anything about managing or even tolerating a Geek, go read it.

Can You Hear That?

image thumb Can You Hear That? I’m not sure how scientific this is but apparently I can hear sounds playing at 17.7kHz.  Yeah, that doesn’t mean much to me either.

I wonder if the sounds on the Ultrasonic-RingTones.com would effect our dogs?

Hmmmm… I guess we’ll see.

On a related note, apparently store owners in Britain that don’t want teenagers hanging around have implemented a “Mosquito Teen Repellent”.  It is a high-pitched sound that can only be heard by young people.  Apparently, it is annoying enough that it drives the teens away.

  • Web Browser
  • Browser Size
  • IP Address
  • Color Depth
  • Javascript Enabled/Disabled
  • Flash Version
  • Cookies Enabled/Disabled

If your on the other end of the support call and need to get this information from your client, send them a link with the name and email address of the client and the email address of the recipient (you), like so:
