Ok, that may not make a lot of sense, but the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers) has just approved the ability to register custom Top Level Domains (TLD).
What is a TLD? Well, its the last part of the Internet address after the last “.”. Usually, one of the following: com, net, info, gov, org, edu.
What does this mean? It means that I can register what ever TLD I want. For example, instead of typing “www.mycompany.com” you could just type “www.mycompany” or just “mycompany”.
Personally, I think that this is going to really create a lot of confusion for the general public.
